Christmas is Coming, My Dog is Getting Fat

Fri 23 Dec 2005 9:15pm

Wow, it’s amazing how quickly Christmas sneaks up on you when you’re away at college for most of December. No tree, no shopping (for the most part), nothing to really put you in the “Christmas is coming up” mindset. Then, you fly home on a plane and BAM, suddenly everything is happening all at once. Yesterday was spent shopping, and today was split between shopping and making Christmas cookies and fudge. Fun times, but I definitely haven’t been treated to the gentle Christmas ramp-up that happened when I was home. It’s more like a concentrated holiday blast.

Also, to address the second part of my post’s title, my dog is getting fat. He’s a little Italian greyhound (a miniature version of a regular greyhound) so he really shouldn’t be eating cookies, cheese, taco meat, and tons of other human food. As evidence of his utterly spoiled state, he will no longer eat regular dog food. I believe that he subsists exclusively on dog treats and table scraps. At least he still drinks tap water. I’d expect him to insist on something more like sparkling Pellegrino water or Diet Coke.

Finally, I spotted this really cool thing today via my daily RSS supply. Bounty County is a site where people post up coding “bounties” that need to get done and offer rewards for their completion. Coders can come to the site and try to complete bounties for money. It’s a little bit weird, considering that it’s not exactly “open source” to require payment for nuking bugs, but it’s an interesting idea. I plan on having a look through the PHP bounties, but I’m really not going to have time to do any of them due to: 1) my current Javascript/AJAX project, 2) my secret blog project, and 3) a list of small tweaks for my own site that need to happen over the break.

If I don’t post again before the big day, then merry Christmas!

[…] This Christmas break has been an interesting one. In many ways it didn’t feel like Christmas. Sean’s post pretty much sums up initial reaction to getting home from Olin. My family has always been pretty big on traditions but for various reasons we ended up breaking most of them this year. We used to go to Seven Springs a couple of days early, pick out a tree and do some skiing (it was quite hectic last year due to Olin’s calendar). We would then open presents on Christmas morning and head over to Grandma’s and Grandpa’s house. However both my grandfathers, one of my grandmothers and my great aunt have passed away since I was a child. It just doesn’t feel the same anymore. This year we stayed at home. We brother and I didn’t get up at the earliest sign of light like we used to (we have grown wiser in our old age). And in a great reversal of roles my brother and I were itching to go skiing at Seven Springs and my parent’s weren’t (we used to dread this because we would always miss whatever our friends were doing). So we ended up at Seven Springs two days after Christmas. Since we didn’t even make it to Pennsylvania until two days after we normally do, we didn’t spend a night a Grandma’s house. Instead we dropped in town for a single day, went out to eat and then came back to Seven Springs. Unfortunately it proceeded to rain the rest of the time we were there (skiing + rain = no fun) so we decided to come home early (on New Year’s Eve). Sidenote:New Year’s Eve - not so exciting when all your college friends a) never came home b) have family plans. […]
