Why I Can Finally Buy a Mac
I’ve always like Macs. Especially the newer laptops, with their lusciously designed, ultra-thin and elegant cases. In addition, their operating system is great, with many excellent usability features and a gorgeous interface. It’s also an excellent platform for graphic and web design: things that I do a lot of. However, I’ve never felt like I could buy a Mac for one simple reason: Windows.
Yes, it’s sad but true. Many things revolve around that operating system from Redmond. Without it, I wouldn’t be able to play games or run much of the other software that I use every day. I don’t especially LIKE Windows, but alas, it is somewhat of a necessity.
However, Apple just made (what I consider to be) an incredibly smart move. They recently announced that they will be transitioning from their long standing PowerPC CPU architecture to processors using Intel’s x86 architecture. This means (as confirmed in articles like this one) that Apple hardware (like the beautiful Mac laptops) will be able to dual-boot both Windows and Mac OS X!
And that is why the next computer I buy will probably be a Mac (perhaps similar to this gorgeous MacBook Pro). The technology may not be quite there yet, but the critical jump has been made. I can finally enjoy the best of both worlds. Thank you Apple, for taking down one of the largest OS/hardware barriers in existence. I am eternally grateful.
UPDATE: It has come to my attention that due to BIOS/EFI incompatibilities, Windows XP won’t be able to run on the new Intel Macs. However, Windows Vista will run just fine, and someone will probably come out with an XP hack at some point.

I was excited about this too. This means that I can use a Mac at my work which is a Windows shop and then when I come home I can go back to heaven and boot to OSX. It will be great.

dude. apple totally annouced the transition like this past summer! yeah…i think I’ll wait ’til 2007 before I get a new mac…when they’ll be fully transitioned to intel. btw, windows vista looks kinda hot…but i’m feeling these operating systems are getting too fuckin’ complex. it’s like they’re making it more user friendly (simpler, i suppose) but they’re adding so much more shit…all these damn features…and how much of those feature will the avg. consumer use. for example, i use Expose a lot…but I really don’t use spotlight…THE feature in Tiger (along with some others)…but maybe that’s because I keep things organized…so no use.
but yeah…i hate complexity…life’s getting more complex…i think Earth needs to reformat its hardrive, wipe everything out…reboot.
